Yes, Citrus Season is here and it’s invigorating! I am a huge fan of lemons and oranges and I truly enjoy the season. They are abundant in the southwest and in Arizona almost everyone has a citrus tree in their back yard. Of course, everyone but me has one and someday I will have a few on the ranch I am looking to buy, but for now I have a few friends that are sweet enough to gift me their unwanted oranges and lemons that have accumulated. Well they had given me, so many I didn’t know what else to do with the oranges besides make soap.

I am experimenting with orange juice, but for now I decided to use the zest. There is no need to dry out the zest to make this soap. It actually performed really well in the soap and dried out in the soap nicely. Because we made a vegan soap the bottom of the bar did not fully become solid once take out of the mold, but it dried once it was out of the mold. The final color was and orange brown, but it was beautiful and the lather was nice. I hope you enjoy this tutorial and make sure you check out savvynaturalista.com for all your soaps and bath bombs and skincare needs…

CAUTION FIRST: Suit up for safe handling practices. That means goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Make sure kids, pets, other distractions, and tripping hazards are out of the house or don’t have access to your soaping space. Always soap in a well-ventilated area.

Citrus Orange Zest Cold Process Soap Recipe:

11 oz. Vegetable shortening (I used soybean oil)

5 oz. Coconut oil

2.27 oz. Lye

5.28 oz. Distilled water

1.55 oz. Orange essential oil

2-4 tbsps. Orange zest (I used heaping tbsps.)

Citrus Orange Zest Cold Process Soap Recipe Directions:

  1. Slowly add lye to distilled water and gently stir until lye has completely dissolved and cooled.
  2. In a microwave safe container melt shortening and coconut oil until dissolved in the microwave for about 3 minutes. I did this in 30 second intervals. Oil mixture should be 120-130 degrees.
  3. Once the lye water and the oils have cooled to 130 degrees or below, (this temperature is perfect for the oils as well) add the lye water to the oils and stick blend the mixture to a thin to medium trace.
  4. Add essential oil and stick blend to medium trace, if trace is to thick just wish in the essential oils
  5. Add orange zest and use a whisk or spatula to fully mix in or you can use the stick blender.
  6. Pour soap in soap mold and let sit for 1-3 days or until soap has become hard.
